Introduction to this site
This is a genealogical site which aspires to record every person with the surname Hewitson and variants. The scope is worldwide but the emphasis is on the United Kingdom where the name originated.
This type of research is commonly known as a One Name Study. The surname has been registered with the Guild of One Name Studies (GOONS) by me John Stark (my mother was a Hewitson), and I have undertaken to correspond with anyone researching the name.
What's in the site, and what isn't
Surnames researched
The spelling of the name Hewitson can vary for an individual.
Hewitson and the variants Hewartson, Hewertson, Hewetson, Hewison and Huitson are recorded in this site. (For the time being, other variants are being recorded if I come across them - this data will be handed over to any GOONS member who assumes responsibility for them in the future). Many of these variants have arisen due to phonetic interpretation in earlier times and have tended to become standardised in later years.
The common surnames Hewit, Hewson and variants have not been researched.
Scope of data
Data in this website is extracted from my main database, which is not available on-line. Consequently, it represents only the 'tip of the iceberg' - my main database is much more detailed.
This is a relatively new site (2003) and data is being added as time permits. It is a personal endeavour, so progress is not as quick as I would wish. A variety of data will be added in due course, but the first priority is the recording of Births, Deaths, and Marriages. Where family relationships are known the BDM entries may link to a family tree. These trees may sometimes extend beyond the Hewitson surname in female lines - this, strictly speaking, is outside the GOONS remit but is included for completeness.
Source data varies. Most often, I have collected the information personally, but some has been donated by correspondents. Sources are not identified in this website, but in case of query I do record them on my research database. Most entries have NOT been double-checked! Researchers are strongly advised to use the data in this site for guidance only, and to consult original source data themselves where possible.
Updates
Data is continually being added to the site. You can be automatically informed when updates are published by subscribing to an RSS news feed. The URL is in the
Updates and Amendments page where you will find a history of all major updates.
Coat of Arms of the Hewitson Surname
There is no such thing as a Coat of Arms for a surname, despite the multitude of companies preying on the gullible offering to provide generic Arms, family pedigrees, etc.
Arms are granted to individuals by the College of Arms (English, Welsh, Northern Irish and Commonwealth families) and The Court of the Lord Lyon (Scotland). Both have websites:

How to use this site
The frame on the left is used for navigation. More features will be added in due course.
BDM Index
The BDM button will display an array of Births, Marriages and Deaths, divided into 10 year ranges.
Selection of a date range will display lists of individuals sorted by firstname, surname, and date.
An individual may link to a family tree page. This is indicated by the symbol which will display the tree when clicked. It is possible to navigate up and down some family trees by clicking on the coloured arrows.
The symbol indicates that more information is available. Clicking it will display a miscellany of information about the person, e.g. biographies, photographs, etc. This information can also be accessed from the trees by clicking on those individuals where the symbol is shown.
The symbol next to a comment indicates that more information is available on an external website. Clicking the icon will open the external site.
The symbol next to a comment indicates a link to a one-name study website run by another member of the GOONS. Clicking the icon will open the external site.

These pages are updated periodically and may not include all surnames in the site. Recent additions can be found in the Updates page.

The email button will generate an email to me. (A word of warning - I find spam a serious problem. Ensure your email subject line clearly identifies your topic to prevent accidental deletion - the email button will generate the start of the subject line for you).
Please don't hesitate to get in touch if you wish to swap information on any Hewitson line, or their descendants.
Technicalities
All pages in this website have been validated to W3C standards.
The website has been developed on a machine with a display resolution of 1024 x 768 with 32bit colour. It has been tested with Internet Explorer 6 with text size set to medium, and on Mozilla Firefox. Other browsers have not yet been tested.
Graphics are used extensively in the site. Some graphics may not display correctly at screen resolutions lower than 1024 x 768.
Many of the pages in this website contain Javascript which may generate a security warning. The Javascript is there to force pages into their normal context within a frame, and to control pop-up windows and screen tips.
This page is in a frame, and you should be able to see a navigation panel on the left, with this page in a content panel on the right. You won't be able to use the website without the navigation panel. If you cannot see this arrangement configure your computer to allow blocked content for this site.
All HTML in the site is handcoded, so the odd error will get through.
Use and misuse of data
The intention of this site is to give as many family history connections as possible whilst respecting personal privacy. Accordingly, entries are restricted to publicly available data, with the details of living persons withheld (unless permission has been received to publish). If these principles have been breached, please contact me.
This is a family history site for family history researchers. There's no advertising or sponsorship. You are welcome to use the data for your own personal researches, but I do not agree to any form of commercial use - this includes submission to companies who sell on data submitted by individuals.
All data in this site and my database will be donated to non-profit genealogical societies for the benefit of future generations of researchers.
