John Hewitson c.1838 - 1900

Baptised Thurs.22 Mar 1838, Stanhope - family living at Frosterley DUR ENG.

By his early teens John was working as a Lead Ore Washer, the usual start for a young lead miner. Like many others, he had to turn to coal mining when the lead mining industry collapsed, migrating with members of his family to Stanley Crook and finally Edmondsley with his widowed mother, brother Anthony and niece Elizabeth Galley.

He is likely to have worked at Edmondsley Colliery
