Descendants of James Huitson c.1809 - 1887, of London and Surrey, England. 13 persons.

This tree has been one of the more interesting investigations. It started with a faux certificate from the Guild of One-Name Studies' Lambeth Marriage Challenge (thanks Marion!): Elizabeth Huitson marrying Charles Edwin Scholfield. I have followed the line through the censuses; here is a summary of the convoluted relationships:

Elizabeth's father James looks to be in modestly comfortable circumstances as a Woollen Dealer. Sophia is a younger sister. Elizabeth marries Charles, he stating his profession as 'Jeweller'. In 1871, they and their children are visiting Charles' mother – he gives his profession as 'artist'.
Sister Sophia marries the widowed Robert Applegarth and has a daughter.
All change for 1881! Elizabeth and her children are visiting her brother-in-law Robert. Sophia and her daughter are living separately in a house near her parents, she being the head of the household. Charles is a visitor to Annie Casson and her 16 year old daughter Ada, 20 years his junior. He gives his profession as 'Accountant'.
In 1891, Charles, Ada, (and Annie) are living together as man and wife, with several children – there is no marriage in the indexes, nor birth entries for the first couple of kids. He gives his profession as 'Artist Photographer'. Elizabeth and her daughters are visiting elsewhere. She gives her status as 'Widow'. Sophia and her daughter are visiting someone else. Robert is on his own.
In 1901, A daughter of Elizabeth is still doing the rounds, visiting. By now Elizabeth is taking in lodgers.. Sophia is still a visitor, this time with her newly married daughter. Charles and his entourage as still together – he is still an Artist/Photographer. Again, Robert is living alone.

So it looks as if the Huitson girls both have had unsettled relationships. Elizabeth definitely so, and Sophia apparently so. Clearly, Elizabeth's marriage has not worked out, with Charles appearing somewhat 'flighty'.
Sophia's marriage too looks unsuccessful. Her husband Robert's census occupations show a suspiciously quick advancement: Cabinet Maker & Joiner; Secretary of a Public Company; Civil Engineer; Electrical Engineer; Submarine Electrical Engineer. But it's true! He was one of the most distinguished of Victorian Trade Unionists, and there is a lot about him on the Internet. (There's some links in my tree). He appears to be a man of high integrity and principles– he was offered to be made a Companion of Honour in 1917 by Lloyd George, but refused. br/>
It would be interesting to know how much of the visiting in the census returns was in fact 'social networking' by committed people.

Non-Hewitson surnames in the tree include Applegarth, Casson, Larcombe, Longmore, and Scholfield.
None of these are currently registered with the Guild of One-name Studies.

Descendants of John Huteson c.1753 - 1849, of Kellah, Northumberland, England. 110 persons.

John lived in the South Tyne valley, at Kellah and nearby. Spellings of the family surname vary, with Hewitson becoming predominant in later years.
Although John followed agrarian occupations, his descendants turned to coal mining which developed throughout the area in the 19th century. (Two descendants were killed in the pits and another severely injured). Many of the family migrated eastwards to the more productive pits west of Newcastle, and to northern County Durham.

John's great-great-great-great-granddaughter, Lyn Wilson is researching this line and has kindly provided data and photographs. She is tantalizingly close to taking the line back a generation or two and would welcome contact from other researchers. Her email is homewilsonat@yahoo.co.uk

Non-Hewitson surnames in the tree include Armstrong, Bailey, Baxter, Bower, Callendar, Cousins, Edgar, Elsworth, Gibson, Graham, Hall, Hardy, Hedley, Heslop, Elliott, Harrison, Johnstone, Lamb, Moralee, Pigg, Ridley, Rutter, Smith, Stirland, Thompson, Turvey, Waugh, Wilson, Woodhall

Descendants of Nelson Hewetson c.1775 - ?, of the Lake District, England. 130 persons.

Nelson's line originated from the parish of Colton, Lancashire, west of Windermere. Most of his children stayed in the area, but son John moved to Lancaster where he developed his business. Children successfully followed him into manufacturing industry. One line moved to Leeds and died out. Other lines moved to Newport in Monmouthshire - one descendant married into the Phillips brewing dynasty.

Surnames include Armstrong, Barrow, Billings, Bleasdale, Carter, Clark, Clary, Cookson, Croysdale, Evans, Fothergill, Gething, Harrison, Hartley, Hope, Pearson, Penny, Phillips, Powell, Pritchard, Robinson, Stone, Swainson, Topham. Note that I am no longer indexing these names from the 'Other Surnames' menu option - it's a lot of work and I have a better idea. I now have database capability on my website and intend to develop a search facility. It will be some time coming, as I have to learn PHP and MySQL.

Thanks to Margaret Mason and Peter Darwen, who provided some of the information on this line.

Descendants of Anthony Hewetson ? - c.1838, of the Lake District, England. 145 persons.

Anthony's roots have not been identified. A daughter was born in 1838, but he is not recorded in the 1841 census. This line is related to that of William Hewertson - cousins were recorded in a census. William and Anthony are probably brothers.

Most descendants stayed local to the Lakes, but three branches migrated from the district: Thomas joined the Royal Horse Guards and brought up his family in the Marylebone area; Braithwaite's daughter married and moved to Bolton; Isabella married a farmer and lived on the southern edge of the Forest of Bowland. Surnames include Barron, Black, Blakeley, Carter, Fleming, Furniss, Gerrard, Green, Grigg, Heptenstall, Hill, Hitchings, Hurd, Kelly, Kennedy, Law, Parkinson, Philipson, Reeve, Reynolds, Robinson, Scholfield, Shaw, Swain, Wearing, Wills, Wilkinson, Wilson, Woof.

Descendants of William Hewitson 1806-1878 of Allendale and Co.Durham, England. 42 persons.

William was a farmer, born in Allendale. He married and settled in County Durham, occupying various farms in the Hunwick and Brancepeth/Willington areas before moving further south to Walworth. His descendants followed him into farming in these areas.

His ancestry has not been established, but there continued to be links with Allendale - as evidenced by visitors in the census returns.

New website goes live

Having ran out of space on www.johnstark.demon.co.uk, this site has migrated to www.johnstark.org. Stage 1, the migration of the Hewitson database is complete. The other databases will remain available on the old domain until they too migrate.

This exercise has taken 9 months. All Hewitson pages have been reviewed, standardised, and checked for compliance to W3C standards. Cascading stylesheets have been introduced throughout.

A major new feature is the introduction of an RSS feed for the Hewitson site. This will enable interested researchers to be informed automatically when I add new data.

Coincidentally, but appropriately, the site is going live on the birthday of my mother, Bessie Hewitson. (I suppose you could say she started it all! - that's her in the photo on the site home page).

Descendant tree of Henry Huitson and Ann Hardy of County Durham, England.

An extensive tree of 463 descendants. Originating in the south of Co.Durham, the line has spread to neighbouring counties, though generally not much further.

Several persons have contributed to this line, principally John Huitson of Northumberland. In some cases there are discrepancies between versions - an example being confusion between Ingelton in Co.Durham and Ingleton in Yorkshire. In all cases, the Co.Durham location is correct.

Introduction of Family Trees, Notes, and Stylesheets

A start has been made on attaching family trees to the BDM listings. Where a tree exists the symbol appears next to the BMD entry and can be clicked to display the tree. It is possible to navigate up and down trees. The data shown in the trees is for identification purposes only and does not represent the full information held - there is usually more off-line. If I think a person might still be living 'Details withheld' will appear, unless permission has been given to publish, or the data is already freely available on the internet.

Similarly, the symbol appears next to the BMD entry if more information is available. This is a miscellany, and may contain anything of interest, including appropriate links to other websites.

Behind the scenes, Stylesheets have been introduced to provide better page formatting and to comply with recommended design standards. The website will gradually migrate to these.

Hewison BMD index entries, England and Wales, 1837 onwards

This is a superb contribution from Ken Phillips. He has collected all the index entries and donated them to this website as a way of making them available to other researchers.

Demographic maps added for the 1901 Census, England & Wales.

This is a first attempt to provide maps of the distribution of the Hewitson name. The basis of the data is the indexes of the 1901 Census (not too reliable, I know). This data was analysed using GenMap from Archer Software, which was used to produce the base maps. You can compare surname distribution by spelling variant of the Hewitson surname, both by 1901 location and birthplace.

[I do not approve of advertisements, product placement, etc. I speak only as a satisfied customer. We have never met, but Steve Archer is a fellow member of the Guild of One-Name Studies, so, OK, OK, one little bit of hype ….You can order GenMap from Steve's website or from the Guild of One-Name Studies ].

Site promoted to live status.

The Hewitson One-Name Study grew from my researches into my own family history, published as an experiment on this website. This release marks the transition into an attempt to provide a useful tool for genealogy researchers.

My mother was a Hewitson, and my father a Stark. Information on both sides are recorded in this website, but kept separate. The Hewitson line is registered with the Guild of One-Name Studies, and priority is being given to developing this side first.
